Obama's Diaper Donors and Edwards, ouch Dodd's Haircuts

This is not a joke!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/23/AR2007102301882.html?hpid=moreheadlines Elrick Williams?s As Campaigns Chafe at Limits, Donors Might Be in Diapers

Elrick Williams's toddler niece Carlyn may be one of the youngest contributors to this year's presidential campaign. The 2-year-old gave $2,300 to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

So did her sister and brother, Imara, 13, and Ishmael, 9, and her cousins Chan and Alexis, both 13. Altogether, according to newly released campaign finance reports, the extended family of Williams, a wealthy Chicago financier, handed over nearly a dozen checks in March for the maximum allowed under federal law to Obama.

Paula Madison, a Los Angeles entertainment executive who is one of Elrick Williams's sisters (he referred calls to her), said Williams had not been regularly involved in political fundraising but got excited about the notion of seeing an African American elected president. He talked to every member of the family about his desire to help Obama. One relative served as a trustee for a fund set up for Williams's children, nieces and nephews, Madison said.

They believed that because a trustee was legally responsible for handling the children's money, that trustee could make the donations on their behalf.

Lawrence Noble, a former FEC general counsel, said the involvement of a trustee can help prove that the child used his or her own money -- which is important -- but does not, on its own, make the contribution legal.

This is the second time in two months that the Obama campaign has returned contributions from young children. The first involved donations from Maryland developer Aris Mardirossian's two children, Matthew, 8, and Karis, 7; each contributed $2,300 to Obama's primary campaign and $2,300 more for a possible general-election contest.

This is even better,

"My children are very engaged in politics, Mardirossian said. "The whole family is engaged. Every Sunday we get together, all the cousins, everybody comes and talks about politics. The children sit down and listen to the debates and everything."

yup, we know those toddlers in diapers really enjoy watching Obama on 'Meet the Press' every Sunday Morning...

Lesson to Obama and his supporters: when you live in a glass house, stop throwing stones...

Obama is also showing no signs of backing away from controversial anti-gay singer McClurkin. The influencial HRC will soon jump in and we'll keep a close eye on his antics of using on group to demonize another group.

http://blogs.reuters.com/trail08/2007/10 23/obama-takes-heat-from-gays-on-gospel -tour

And now we hear, via MSNBC, that Obama's staff think they've weathered the storm, that the crisis has now passed, and it won't damage them much at all.

However, the Obama campaign showed no signs of backing away from McClurkin's inclusion on the 3-day concert tour through South Carolina.

Meanwhile, Dodd takes a brilliant swipe at Edwards's expensive haircuts...

Dodd and Edwards

I didn't catch this on the first listen to Chris Dodd's new ad, but as his barbershop scene fades at the very end, he asks the barber, "How much are these haircuts?"

It's an obvious shot at John Edwards, and seems to be part of a broader move by Dodd to attempt to occupy what had been, specifically, Edwards' place in the race: As the hero of the online Left and the voice of confrontation, rather than compromise, with the administration.

Watch Dodd's ad yourself!

Yeah, talk about Edwards' haircut et al., but don't you dare talk about Hillary's clothing choices!!!

Obama's Diaper Donors (none / 0)

I read that fundrasing story earlier today. I thought it was halarious. Since when did a 2-year old have the judgment to donate $2300? They are giving it back, so that's good.

Re: Obama's Diaper Donors (2.00 / 1)

It's nice to see that the media has the time to scrutinize the donations of someone not named Hillary.

Please, this is nothing compared to the research done on Clinton's contributions.

LOL!!!! (none / 0)

The money was returned.

This has happened to every candidate.  With kids involved.  All this was on MSNBC, this morning with Chuck Todd.

Oh, BTW, how was Hillary's Lobbyist Luncheon with Rural Americans at Monsanto in D.C., yesterday?  I am here in Iowa and some farmers were talking about it.

BTW.  They were not happy about it either.

I don't speak Chinese. I'm not even Chinese, but I was able to understand what you were saying, so bear with me.

You are speculating. The article pointed out that some contributors contributed money because others were doing so and they wanted to get into the game. As of yet, there is no proof anyone was coerced into donating money to the Clinton camp.

Re: LOL!!!! (none / 0)

FYI, I'm not Chinese either. I'm black as many folks around here know.

Anyway, I agree that it's unfair to allege coercion, or even any illegality. I do beleive, however, that a sizable portion of the donations were made to curry favor within the community, as opposed to being expressions of support with Clinton. Of course, there is nothing illegal about this. Moreover, I would hesitate to blame Clinton herself even if their was some illegal activity involved absent clear or tacit approval of her campaign.

I actually believe that much more nefarious activity took place, though I cannot prove it. This is why I made those accusations in a language few here would understand---you just brought more attention to something most folks would ignore.

She absolutely works for the campaign, bookgrl.  She's so dishonest that is pathetic at this point.  She has so many online names it is outrageous.  I believe she has added a few more to her repertoire. I can't want for JEROME to start reading IP addresses.

Hsu was bad, and understandable.  She did the right thing in returning the money.  But this?  I mean, what the hell is going on?  Again, no more Chinese affiliated scandals.  Her husband had one while he was president, now this is number two for her.  And it reads, exactly, like a shakedown on people who do not understand the system her in the United States.

not to mention some people in the LA Times article v. Clinton "came over from China when she was 5" happen to be high up in democratic circles in NYC. Plus the campaign had already returned donations in the previous spring....  yet you jumped on it with multiple comments about dishwashers etc.

Re: Obama's Diaper Donors and Edwards, ouch Dodd's (none / 0)

The haircut reference is simply a joke and I see no "shot" there.  The ad itself, though, is incredibly cheesy - even by the maudlin standards of political ads - and almost painful to watch.

Contrast the tortured way in which this ad lays out the facts of Dodd's background and experience with the way in which Richardson's excellent "job interview" ads accomplished the exact same goal.  Not all ad agencies are created equal, it seems.

His Donor Base Exanded (none / 0)

Without the benefit of a likewise expansion of support in the polls.  In fact, it was juxtaposed against a decline.

Something had to give.  Of course, on the Internet, nothing stops me from putting my 14 month year old's name on a 2k contribution to Obama.

Or anyone for that matter.

Re: Obama's Diaper Donors and Edwards, ouch Dodd's (none / 0)

As you say, Obama does indeed live in a glass house, where there is full transparency which is why the money has been returned.  I know the diary is meant to be a hit piece on Obama but it seems to me when his supporters get so excited they try to contribute from every angle and yet the campaign returns the money, I don't see the negative.  That's the story, the supporters are excited, the campaign transparent.  I guess the idea of a glass house is, for someone who only lives behind closed curtains, only a place to throw stones at, not let the sun shine in and reveal everything going on.

Re: Obama's Diaper Donors and Edwards, ouch Dodd's (none / 0)

Why should Obama cede the stage to a bigot?  The idea that if someone we don't like appears somewhere we must leave him alone with the audience, or that appearing side by side with someone of a hateful viewpoint somehow is an endorsement or a revelation of your true nature is nonsensical.  And it is exactly what has lead us down the path where the fanatical right has taken over.  If someone is leaving the tour it should be McClurkin, not the pro-Gay rights Obama.  The politics you endorse have failed us over and over.  It's time to turn the page and stand up for what we believe in front of any audience and side by side with any viewpoint.

Re: Obama's Diaper (none / 0)

I think Obama is making a mistake but we will see how it plays out.  Obama seems to think lately the Presidency is like the Grammy Awards- where according to acceptance speeches,  votes don't matter and God picks the winners.  God is sitting this one out, he better go back thinking about the voters.
