Likely GOP spin on Troopergate Report

You can get a link to the report at:

http://media.adn.com/smedia/2008/10/10/1 6/Branchflowerreport.source.prod_affilia te.7.pdf

Now here is the smoke screen that the GOP is likely to play. They are likely to jump on finding number of 2 (page 8 of the report), which reads "Governor Palin's firing of Commissioner Monegan was a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority to hire and fire executive branch department heads." They will try to say that it means she did nothing illegal.

The problem is that the report also finds that "Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating ... the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act ("any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of ... trust"). Same page of the report. Think about it carefully - the two conclusion are NOT mutually exclusive.

The other problem, is that Palin has said that neither she, her husband, or anyone in the Governor's office ever pressured Monegan to fire Trooper Wooten. This report, in no uncertain terms, says that this is not true. So at a minimum, Palin has publicly lied about the circumstances for firing Monegan.

Finally, Governor Palin has criticized the report because the report was not based on her testimony. Please - even Mr. Magoo can could see through this one!

to retort "She broke public trust, how can the American people trust her as VP." Then you say, "What does that say about John McCain and the associates he places around him." Don't even get into the legality of it because in the end that is a losing argument for us. And to be honest I think breach of trust is as bad as breaking a law anyways.

Re: The key is (none / 0)

I think the even better point than the breach of trust is that she publicly lied. She publicly said in August that neither she, her husband, or anyone at the Governor's office pressured Monegan to fire Wooten. This is simply a lie.

Thanks for the rec.

Re: Likely GOP spin on Troopergate Report (none / 0)

Her lawyer is already spinning away, basically arguing that because the Palins didn't have any financial stake in having Wooten fired, they did nothing wrong.  This, of course, is bull, because the statue, according to the AP, reads that "any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that (public) trust."  The "or" there is quite crucial.

Re: Likely GOP spin on Troopergate Report (none / 0)

She is spinning it, just as I predicted. She is saying that finding that she legally fired Monegan was legal was a vindication. It is not. While the firing may have been legal, pressuring him was a breach of ethical rules.

As I said before, her spin relies on the first finding being mutually exclusive with the second. They are not.

Is she required to resign? (none / 0)

It seems as if she should be relieved of her post as governor, given her behavior.

She might enjoy that because it would give her more time to fly around the nation - seemingly whipping up hatred.

What a mess...

Re: Is she required to resign? (none / 0)

She is not required to resign. These findings are just a report and do not carry the weight of criminal conviction or impeachment. She can only be removed by impeachment and subsequent conviction in the Alaska Senate.

However, the report can be used as a referral for impeachment, but not likely criminal prosecution. Don't forget, there is also going to be an investigation of her per diem reimbursements.

I seriously believe that there is a good chance that she is going to be impeached. Realize that she was not very popular with Republicans in the Alaska legislature before this fiasco. Her unsuccessful efforts to obstruct the inquiry certainly did not make her any friends. I wouldn't be surprised if obstruction of justice is added to the bill.

Her political career will be over after this election. She is well on her way to becoming the next Ann Coulter.
